Meet Skylar
A big part of my life is my bestest buddy Skylar, and so that I don’t fill my entire about page up with images and information on her, I figured I’d do a dedicated post instead.
Skylar is our sprocker spaniel, (springer x cocker spaniel) from the forest of dean. She was one of 13 puppies so to giver her a fighting chance, she was fostered onto her half sister who had just had puppies also. This eventually meant that we went from the smallest of one litter to the biggest!
We collected her on the August bank holiday 2012, and Tim and Skylar spent the first 2 weeks living with me in Stroud. She did so much growing in these first couple of weeks, she was also a total monkey. She found that the best time for zoomies was when I was wanting to go to bed, she fell in the neighbour’s koi pond and then ran around their house soaking wet!
After the first couple of weeks Tim and Skylar returned to Wales where she was introduced to the other family dogs and the cats. There was a love/tolerate relationship with one of the cats as well spending time in the woods and land rovers with Tim.
Around 9 months old, Skylar has a seizure after her dinner one day. Whilst she came out a bit dazed, she was OK, however Tim and I were hugely concerned as Tims previous dog Millie had a couple of these before her sudden passing the year before. We went to the vets and this was the start of a long process to find out what was causing the seizures and what medication would be right to control them. After many tests, including liver shunt tests, ultra sounds and an MRI she was declared healthy but suffered from epilepsy which she is still on medication for now.
I was able to move up to Wales in 2014 and started my own business J.H. Leather. This was when my bond with Skylar grew as I was now spending all day with her. She was coming to work with me as I could keep an eye on her in case she had another seizure, and it also kept her out of trouble at the bike park as she had learnt that customers kept food in their vehicles, and she had no qualms about relieving them of it…
Since moving up to Wales, we have taken Skylar to Scotland on holiday many times and in the last few years, we have also taken her sailing – which she tolerates!
In 2017 Skylar started having some issues in her shoulder, there is a tendon that sits in a grove and runs over the shoulder blade. She has managed to aggravate it, and it swells and then rubs in this groove causing her discomfort. She has had this issue on and off in both shoulders now, and so we have to be careful as to how much exercise she can do off lead, as she still just runs around like a crazy thing!
This year we celebrated her 10th birthday! I still cannot believe where that time has gone! Skylar is my absolute world, and I wouldn’t be without her. She is my bestest buddy (sorry Tim) and my favourite thing is taking her out and exploring the beautiful country around us.
Anyway, I hope you have enjoyed meeting Skylar and seeing her grow into my gorgeous adventure puppy (yes, at 10 she is still my puppy).
